The Big Moon and Mystery Jets - 08/10/16

Sooo, Saturday the 8th October (omg I'm so far behind!!) Mystery Jets were playing in the Liquid Rooms, hadn't actually got the chance to see them live yet so thought it would be one to add to the long list.

Venue
So we were in The Liquid Rooms, the one and only place for a Friday night out, Propaganda is possibly one of the best nights out of the student week (unpopular opinion no doubt) Never the less, great little venue for a gig.

The Big Moon

I was ecstatic to find out The Big Moon were supporting. I've seen them a few times now, they were supporting The Vaccines and The Maccabees both pretty big bands to open for. Even for such big bands these girls weren't in anyway just supports in my eyes, they most definitely opened both shows with a bang and they know how to make the room bounce. The Big Moon are literally one of my favourite things ever right now, showing everyone what girls can really do! They are my idols! The foursome consists of vocals from the beautiful Juliette, lead guitarists Sophie, bass by Celia, and Fern on drums. I've been lucky enough to chat to them on a few occasions and they seem like such a genuine bunch of gals, so bubbly and full of energy, and it shows in their music and stage performance. I'm struggling to find any negatives here... they are such gems. They are Annie Macs hottest record with their newest single 'Formidable' which is available from midnight tonight(eek!!) While you're waiting for that to come out find them anywhere and everywhere, I guarantee you'll love them!!

Mystery Jets
Album cover art - Curve of the Earth

So I've only recently got really into Mystery Jets, never too late, these guys are class, they're the type of band you stick on when you've had a really busy day and all you want to do is just sit and chill. Such a great live set too. The indie rock band consist of Blaine Harrison (vocals, guitar and keyboard) William Rees (guitars and vocals) Jack Flanagan (bass) and Kapi Trivedi (drums) They know how to fill a stage for sure, they have so much energy and so much effort and dedication goes into each and every song performed. They performed my personal favourite Telomere  off their album, Curve of the Earth, which came out at the start of 2016, another of them being Bubblegum. I have linked the VEVO video from youtube so you can check it out for yourself. You can also find them on all music apps so I would recommend adding Curve of the Earth to your playlist.

Catholic Action - 01/10/16

wowowow I have not posted in years, feel like that should change. I need something to procrastinate over doing uni work so I'm going to try be more up-to-date with all this jazz

So October 1st, myself and my pal went along to The Mash House in Edinburgh where Catholic Action (plus guests) were playing.

The venue
OK so to start with, The Mash House as a venue is cracking! located on The Cowgate (gets my vote already) you go up some... creepy stairs round the back of an old brick building. The entrance is one of those doors where you have to, kind of sidewards hobble to get through, the door guy gave us our stamps and we were on our way. Now initially, its vibes struck me as 'Camp' (not what you think) - potato sacks covered the walls and they had that sort of khaki army mesh blanket hanging from the roof; the type you expect to see soldiers scrambling under, so yeah not the initial thought of camp. Bar was pretty steep for a pair of students but we weren't really complaining, after all... they did red stripe.

So, CA had some pretty tight support acts. The night was kicked off with Star Rover, a locally bred 4 piece band. They deem themselves Grunge/alternative-pop, and I agree, right up my street and thoroughly enjoyed them, will be keeping an eye out for their next gig. Find them on Soundcloud and
Bandcamp.com

Second up was Lost in Vancouver. Loved these guys so much. Another locally sourced Band wearing the indie/alternative logo. These guys were so tight and I can definitely see them playing bigger venues in the future, check them out here
please excuse my horrendous attempts at photography

Onto our 4th beer just before the guys came on (big mistake). Catholic Action started off with 'L.U.V' the song that really made me get into them and the one that has got them onto shows like Huw Stephens on BBC Radio 1. The band from Glasgow consist of vocalist Chris McCrory; who is also drummer for 'Casual Sex' (ya, I know stuff) Jamie Dubber on bass, Ryan Clark on drums with Andrew Macpherson joining later to add a lead guitarist to the glam rock gurus (get the eyeliner out)

photo skills improving exponentially with drink- CATHOLIC ACTION

I first encountered these lovely lads last year at none other than Mumford and Sons' festival 'Gentlemen of the Road' held in none other than b-e-a-utiful Aviemore. They drew up a pretty decent sized crowd to the smaller stage, I knew straight away I had to keep my eyes on these guys! I saw them again the same year a couple months later at Belladrum Tartan Heart Festival where they yet again proved themselves worthy.
Catholic Action released their newest single 'Rita Ora' days before the gig which was lovely, they also  played the B-side 'Breakfast' which is one of my personal favourites.
After the gig we had a chat to the guys and we've been promised an album in the new year (yeeeeeees!!)   So keep a look out for that, 1000% worth it!!
In the mean time, you can find there singles on Apple music and Spotify.
But if you're too lazy for that --->  L.U.V - Catholic Action

To sum up:
fabulous night, fabulous bands, fabulous booze, sore heads in the morning xxx
